Yet, to blame nature entirely is to ignore our own architectural hubris.

Over the past three decades, rapid, unplanned urbanization has choked natural floodplains. Roads have been carved recklessly into unstable mountain walls, acting as scars that invite landslides at the slightest provocation. Hydroelectric tunnels and concrete embankments have altered the ancient pathways of water, as if humanity could negotiate terms with gravity. When the rivers swell, they do not destroy out of malice; they simply reclaim what was always theirs.

The warning signs have flashed repeatedly across the region, from Melamchi to Tibet. Each disaster leaves behind a temporary wave of shock, followed by a collective amnesia where rebuilding begins immediately in the exact same hazardous paths. Early warning systems remain sparse, often relying on rudimentary communication that fails before the torrent arrives. Sensors buried in inaccessible glacial valleys could buy precious minutes, yet implementation lags behind the accelerating pace of the melt.

Mingma survived because he trusted the sound before he saw the sight—the sudden, unnatural thinning of the river followed by a towering wall of white water. But as he looks up at the scarred peaks from a makeshift camp across the ridge, the underlying dread remains. The roof of the world is unstable, the air is warming faster than models predicted, and down below, the rivers are still running heavy with the memory of the ice.
