It is a comforting narrative for people who understand nothing about how fire actually behaves. It is also completely wrong.

It means restoring traditional indigenous fire management practices—controlled, low-temperature burns executed during safe seasonal windows to strip the forest floor of combustible tinder.

When you remove the fuel load, you remove the fire's oxygen and energy. A forest that has been properly managed through mechanical thinning and prescribed burns does not generate the towering, thousand-foot flame fronts that require suicide missions from the sky.

The tragedy near Athens was entirely preventable, but not because of air traffic control upgrades. It happened because we continue to rely on a theatrical, inefficient, and dangerous method of fighting fires that benefits contractors and politicians far more than it protects ecosystems or human lives.
